How Do I Move On After My Mom's Death?
Losing a parent at any age is one of the most challenging and traumatic experiences you may ever have.
Our parents are there from the moment we open our eyes and they come to define our lives in so many ways. That nurturing, loving care of your mother was already present in your life before you even have memories.
That’s precisely why losing your mom will be painful on levels you have never known before.
Thankfully the Bible has a lot of hope, encouragement, and comfort for those dealing with such pain.
First and foremost, Jesus says in
Matthew 5:4, “God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
Jesus lets us know so many times through the Bible that no matter what pain we feel in this life, He will be right there to comfort us.
He doesn’t abandon us in our pain or leave us to drown in it. He grabs us by the hand and lifts us out of our despair.
Psalm 34:18 reads, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
Even though mourning and healing take time, we don’t go through that process alone.
God Himself is right by our side, helping us when our hearts are broken and our spirits are crushed. He guides us through that process with His powerful hand.
Even though we will miss our mothers in this life greatly, we can trust that they are free from the pain of this life and safely at the side of our Lord.
Revelation 14:13 reads, “And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!”
This verse teaches us that they are now free from the burdens of this life and that their legacy lives on.
The good deeds they’ve done in this life leave a mark that will live in us forever and help us to live in honor of their memory.
We don’t have to worry about where they are now or if they are happy. They are in the presence of the Lord, the very happiest, safest place they can be!
It is challenging, but we can find joy in the fact that we know they are happy and free in the Lord.
And as hard as it is, we must also remember that death is NOT the end!
Revelation 21:1-5 reads, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone.
And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!”.
If our mother knew the Lord, this is the reality they are experiencing in Heaven!
They are living in this place of perfect peace, joy, and love, where God Himself is present.
Our mom is enjoying a face-to-face relationship with Him, so close that He wipes the very tears from her eyes.
Our mom is safely in the Lord’s arms, where she’ll be forever.
And if we choose to follow God as well, we will join her there when our time in this world comes to an end. We’ll have that joyful reconciliation with her that our hearts long for.
With that in mind, it’s important to keep in mind that our suffering is temporary and that God will replace it with joy.
Romans 8:18 says, “What we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal to us later.”
God’s love, glory, and reward for those who faithfully live this life according to His ways is far greater than any pain we face in this life.
We cannot even comprehend what God has waiting for us.
While the pain is excruciating, we must place our pain in God’s hand, trusting Him to bring us to a place of healing.
We can rest assured that He will be by our side throughout the entire process and that the precious mother we lost is safe and secure in His arms forever.
