Why Does God Allow Evil?

Why Does God Allow Evil?

One of the hardest questions people ask is this: If God is good, why does He allow evil?

When we see war, suffering, injustice, and tragedy in the world, it’s natural to wrestle with this question. The Bible does not ignore this reality. Instead, it helps us understand where evil came from and reminds us that God’s plan is greater than the darkness we sometimes see around us.

Evil Entered the World Through Sin

From the very beginning, Scripture shows us where evil began. In the Garden of Eden, God created a perfect world. There was no suffering, no death, and no sin. But when the serpent tempted Adam and Eve, sin entered the world.

This was not the world God originally intended.

God created humanity in His image and gave us something incredibly important—the freedom to choose. We can choose right or wrong, good or evil, love or rejection. Without this freedom, we would simply be programmed creatures.

But if God forced us to love Him, would that truly be love?

Real love must be freely chosen. The ability to choose is what makes relationships meaningful—with God and with one another.

Because humanity chose sin, the world became broken. Yet even in a fallen world, God has not abandoned His creation.

God’s Love Is Greater Than Evil

Even though evil exists, the Bible reminds us that God’s love is stronger than anything this world can bring against us.

Romans 8:38–39 tells us:

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

No matter what happens in this life, God’s love remains constant.

We Cannot Always Understand God’s Plan

There are moments when we simply cannot understand why certain things happen. But the Bible reminds us that God sees the full picture while we only see a small part of it.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 says:

“He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work God has done from beginning to end.”

Trying to fully understand God’s purposes can be like a young child trying to understand advanced lessons meant for adults. Our understanding is limited, but God’s wisdom is perfect.

As Scripture reminds us:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
— Isaiah 55:8–9

Even when we cannot fully understand God’s plans, we can trust that His ways are always higher and wiser than our own.

God Can Bring Good From Suffering

Even though suffering is painful, God can use difficult seasons to shape our lives and deepen our faith.

Romans 5:3–5 reminds us:

“Not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.”

Through life’s hardships, God can strengthen our character and lead us to a deeper hope in Him.

God Understands Our Pain

Sometimes people wonder if God truly understands suffering. But the greatest example of God’s love is found in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

God watched His own Son endure suffering and death on the cross so that we could experience forgiveness and eternal life.

John 3:16 tells us:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

God did not remain distant from our suffering. He stepped into it through Jesus.

Why Doesn’t God Stop All Evil?

God certainly has the power to stop evil instantly. But if He removed all evil immediately, where would the line be drawn?

Should He remove murder and violence? Of course. But what about lying, anger, jealousy, or selfishness? In God’s eyes, sin is sin—and every human being has fallen short.

If God eliminated all sin instantly, none of us would remain.

Instead, God shows mercy. He gives humanity time to turn to Him, receive forgiveness, and experience redemption through Christ.

This opportunity for redemption is one of the greatest expressions of God’s love.

Evil Will Not Last Forever

Although evil exists now, the Bible promises that it will not last forever. One day, God will bring justice and restore His creation.

Revelation 21:4 gives us this beautiful promise:

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

The suffering we experience today cannot compare to the glory God has prepared for those who love Him.

God Has Not Forgotten You

Even in a world where evil exists, God’s love, grace, and promises remain stronger than anything darkness can bring.

At times, when we see evil around us, it can feel like God is distant or silent. But the Bible reminds us that God has not forgotten you. He sees every tear and understands every burden we carry.

Psalm 34:18 tells us:

“The Lord is near unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

God walks with us through every trial, every sorrow, and every uncertainty. Even when the world feels dark, His presence remains constant and His promises remain sure.

The greatest answer to the problem of evil is found at the cross. When Jesus died and rose again, He defeated sin and death forever. Because of Him, evil will not win.

Through Christ, forgiveness is offered, hope is restored, and eternal life is promised.

And one day, when Christ returns, the broken world we see today will be made new. Until that day, we hold firmly to the promise that God is still in control, and His kingdom is coming.
